About Helical Gearboxes
Helical gearboxes are enclosed gear drives that transmit torque and reduce speed through gears whose teeth are cut at an angle (the helix angle) to the shaft axis. Because the angled teeth engage gradually rather than all at once, helical meshes carry higher loads, run quieter and run smoother than equivalent spur gears, with overlapping contact that distributes load across several teeth at any moment. This makes them the default choice for continuous-duty industrial drives across material handling, cement and general machinery.
The family spans several geometries that share the same tooth principle. In-line (coaxial) units keep input and output on the same axis; parallel-shaft units offset the output for side-mounting and hollow-shaft fitting; bevel-helical units turn the drive through 90 degrees with a spiral-bevel stage. Single-stage reductions typically cover roughly 1.25:1 to 8:1, with two- and three-stage trains reaching around 200:1 and higher. Per-stage efficiency is generally high, commonly cited near 96-98 percent, so multi-stage units usually remain well above 90 percent overall. Load rating follows AGMA 2001/2101 or ISO 6336, with enclosed-drive practice per AGMA 6010 and gear quality to ISO 1328 / AGMA 2015.
Construction centres on case-hardened alloy-steel gears, often 20MnCr5 or 18CrNiMo7-6, with ground or lapped profiles for accuracy and noise control. Housings are typically cast iron (aluminium on smaller gearmotors), on SKF/FAG-equivalent bearings with shaft seals and ISO VG 220/320 mineral or synthetic PAO lubrication, frequently lifetime-filled on compact frames.
Units integrate with IEC or NEMA motors via adapter, servo flanges or free input shafts, and output as solid or hollow shaft, shrink disc or flange in foot, B5/B14 or shaft-mounted arrangements. Service factor is selected per AGMA SF against the duty.
Himalay's MSME partners manufacture helical gearboxes and gearmotors with gear-rating to AGMA/ISO 6336, ISO 9001 quality systems, load/efficiency test reports and traceability; CE (Machinery Directive), ATEX/IECEx for hazardous areas, and SABER (Saudi Arabia) coordinated as part of the standard order flow.
