Starch Based Polymers
Starch-based polymers are bio-based, biodegradable compounds built on thermoplastic starch (TPS), usually derived from corn, potato, or tapioca and blended with biodegradable copolyesters such as PBAT or with PLA to make processable resin pellets. They are used for compostable carrier and waste bags, mulch films, food-service items, agricultural film, and rigid moulded articles where high renewable content and industrial compostability are required.
Grades are framed by application (film blowing, injection, or extrusion), bio-based/starch content, melt flow index (ASTM D1238 / ISO 1133), and mechanical properties (elongation, tensile, tear). Buyers commonly require conformity to EN 13432 or ASTM D6400 for compostable claims, which call for at least 90% biodegradation under industrial composting within 180 days, disintegration within 12 weeks, and heavy-metal/eco-toxicity limits; some grades also target home-compostability schemes, which are documented as a separate claim. Food-contact suitability is referenced to EU 10/2011 and FDA framing where relevant.
Packaging is generally moisture-protective 25 kg bags or FIBC, since starch blends are moisture-sensitive; pre-drying and storage parameters appear as specification notes on the technical data sheet rather than handling instructions.
