About Worm Gearboxes
Worm gearboxes are right-angle gear drives in which a helical worm (screw) meshes with a worm wheel, turning the drive through 90 degrees while achieving a high reduction in a single, compact stage. Because the worm slides against the wheel rather than rolling like a gear pair, a single worm stage can deliver ratios that would otherwise need two or three gear stages, in a small, quiet, low-cost package. This makes worm units a default choice for conveyors, gates, hoists and positioning duty where compactness and load-holding matter more than peak efficiency.
The family runs from single-reduction units through double-reduction and helical-worm combinations. Single-stage ratios commonly span about 5:1 to 100:1, with NMRV+NRV combinations reaching several hundred to one. Efficiency depends strongly on ratio and lead angle: low-ratio worms can reach roughly 85-90 percent, while high-ratio units fall toward 60 percent or lower. The same sliding action gives many higher-ratio worms a self-locking tendency, useful for hoists and positioners that must hold a load, though it should be verified per duty rather than assumed. Enclosed-drive practice and gear quality follow AGMA 6034 / ISO 1328 where applicable.
Construction pairs a hardened, ground alloy-steel worm with a phosphor-bronze worm wheel for conformability and wear resistance. Compact NMRV-style sizes use pressure die-cast aluminium housings; larger frames use cast iron. Bearings are SKF/FAG-equivalent, with shaft seals and ISO VG 220/320 lubrication, often synthetic PAO and lifetime-filled to manage worm-mesh heat.
Units accept IEC motor adapters, NEMA flanges or free input shafts, output as solid or hollow shaft, and mount in foot, flange (B5/B14) or shaft-mounted arrangements. Service factor is selected per AGMA SF against thermal and shock duty.
Himalay's MSME partners manufacture worm gearboxes and worm gearmotors with gear-rating to AGMA/ISO 6336 where applicable, ISO 9001 quality systems, load/efficiency test reports and traceability; CE (Machinery Directive), ATEX/IECEx for hazardous areas, and SABER (Saudi Arabia) coordinated as part of the standard order flow.
