About Wiper, Dust & Labyrinth Seals
Wiper, dust, and labyrinth seals are exclusion and bearing-protection seals: their primary job is to keep contamination out rather than to retain pressure. Wipers and scrapers fit at the gland of hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders to scrape dirt, moisture, and ice from the rod as it retracts, protecting the rod seal behind them. Dust seals and excluder lips guard rotary shaft seals, bearings, and bushings against abrasive ingress. Labyrinth seals are non-contacting (or lightly contacting) seals that create a tortuous path of grooves and clearances which dissipates pressure and blocks particle and fluid migration without rubbing wear, often used as bearing isolators on pumps, motors, gearboxes, and fans. Variants include single- and double-lip wipers (snap-in or press-fit, metal-cased or all-rubber), V-ring axial seals, felt and labyrinth grease seals, and rotating/stationary bearing-isolator labyrinths. Materials are chosen for the duty: polyurethane and NBR for cylinder wipers, FKM for hot or chemical environments, and aluminium, bronze, stainless, or engineered polymer (PTFE, PA) for labyrinth bodies, sometimes with elastomer O-ring energisers. Selection considers rod or shaft diameter, contamination type, temperature, speed, and whether contact or non-contact is preferred.
