Surge Protection Devices
Surge protection devices (SPDs) limit transient overvoltages on low-voltage AC power systems, diverting surge energy to earth to protect downstream equipment from lightning and switching transients. They are sourced for distribution boards, industrial panels, telecom and data installations, and renewable-energy systems across the EU and GCC. The governing standard is IEC 61643-11, which classifies low-voltage SPDs into Type 1, Type 2 and Type 3 (Class I/II/III). Type 1 devices, fitted at the main incomer, withstand partial direct lightning current and are tested with the 10/350 microsecond waveform; Type 2 devices protect distribution boards against induced and switching surges, tested with the 8/20 microsecond waveform; Type 3 devices give point-of-use protection for sensitive equipment. Multi-type (T1+T2) combination SPDs are common. Key parameters are nominal discharge current (In), maximum discharge current (Imax) or impulse current (Iimp), voltage protection level (Up), maximum continuous operating voltage (Uc), and the system configuration (TN, TT, IT). SPDs are also rated for short-circuit current withstand and are typically paired with a back-up overcurrent device. Construction uses metal-oxide varistors or gas discharge tubes in DIN-rail modules, often with pluggable cartridges, a remote-signalling contact and a status window. Options cover single- to four-pole units, photovoltaic DC SPDs, and data/signal protectors.
