About Set Screw
Set screws β often called grub screws β are headless, fully threaded fasteners driven by an internal hex (or, less commonly, slot or Torx) recess and tightened until the point bears against a mating part to lock it in position. The classic use is securing a pulley, gear, collar or hub to a shaft, where the point digs into or seats against the shaft to resist rotation and axial slip. The point geometry is the key variant and is standardised by DIN/ISO: cup point (DIN 916 / ISO 4029) for general clamping, flat point (DIN 913 / ISO 4026) for set-and-reset on hardened or finished surfaces, cone point (DIN 914 / ISO 4027) for permanent location into a drilled spot, dog point (DIN 915 / ISO 4028) to engage a hole or slot, and knurled-cup for vibration resistance. Hexagon socket set screws are commonly supplied to property class 45H in alloy steel through-hardened for point durability, with stainless A1/A2 (around 21H-style hardness) where corrosion resistance is needed and brass or nylon-tip versions for soft or delicate shafts. Finishes include plain black-oxide, zinc and passivated stainless. Point type, hardness and length all influence holding security. On the configuration side, the controlling variables are point geometry for the clamping action, hardness class (such as 45H) against the shaft material, length so the point seats without bottoming, and recess size for the drive tool; seating torque is set so the point bites without stripping the socket. Manufacturers generally verify hardness, recess and dimensions on a sampling basis. Where specified, Himalay coordinates material traceability, hardness and mechanical test data, salt-spray corrosion reports and RoHS/REACH declarations, coordinated as part of the standard order flow.
