About Packing & Gland Seals
Packing gland seals, or compression packing, seal rotating shafts and reciprocating rods by compressing a braided or formed packing material inside a stuffing box against the shaft and bore. As the gland follower is tightened, the packing expands radially to limit leakage while permitting a controlled weep that lubricates and cools the running surface. They are widely used in centrifugal and reciprocating pumps, valves, mixers, and marine sterntubes, valued for serviceability and tolerance of difficult conditions. Packings are supplied as continuous coil or pre-cut rings, in square or special cross-sections sized to the stuffing-box bore minus shaft. Material families define the duty: PTFE and graphite-impregnated PTFE for chemical service and low friction; flexible graphite for high temperature and steam; aramid (Kevlar-type) and carbon-fibre yarns for abrasive and high-shaft-speed pump duty; and natural fibres such as cotton or ramie for low-cost water service. Corner-reinforced and blended constructions balance sealing, wear, and shaft protection. Selection considers medium, temperature, pressure, pH, and shaft speed (PV value), with valve packing favouring graphite or PTFE for low emissions and pump packing favouring lubricated braids. Through Himalay, partner manufacturers can typically supply material and compound certificates to EN 10204 3.1 where specified, dimensional and density inspection, and RoHS/REACH declarations; low-emission (fugitive-emission) and food- or potable-water-grade packings are available for relevant duty, and material, cross-section, and any test documentation are coordinated as part of the standard order flow.
