Octane Improvers
Octane improvers are fuel additives blended into gasoline to raise its octane rating and improve anti-knock performance in spark-ignition engines. The category covers oxygenate octane boosters such as MTBE, ETBE and methanol/ethanol blendstocks, and organometallic and aromatic-amine boosters such as MMT and N-methylaniline used where permitted. For EU and GCC buyers, these are bought as additive-grade products defined by purity and octane-blending value.
Grades are defined by chemistry and purity. MTBE and ETBE are specified by assay (commonly 98%+), with limits on moisture, methanol/ethanol and peroxides; metallic boosters are specified by active-metal content and concentration. Key parameters include assay, density, water content and blending octane number. Many octane improvers, particularly metallic types, are subject to regulatory limits or bans in certain markets, so the destination regime governs which grade is eligible. Octane improvers ship in ISO tanks, flexitanks, drums (200-210 L) and IBCs. Most are flammable and shipped under assigned UN numbers per ADR/IMDG.
