    About O-Rings & Static Rings

    O-rings are toroidal elastomer seals that, when compressed between two mating surfaces in a groove, deform to block leakage of fluids or gases. They are the most widely used static and slow-dynamic seal in industry, found in hydraulic fittings, valves, pumps, flanges, and instrumentation. As static rings they seal face or radial joints; with suitable groove design and back-up rings they also serve reciprocating and low-speed rotary duty. Dimensions and tolerances follow ISO 3601-1, which defines inside diameter and cross-section series with Class A (precision, tolerances close to AS568) and Class B (general purpose) grades; ISO 3601-2 covers housing/groove dimensions, and ISO 3601-3 sets surface-quality acceptance grades N, S, and CS for general, high-performance, and critical service. Sizing is by inside diameter and cross-section, commonly to metric or AS568 inch series. Material selection governs chemical and temperature capability: NBR for oils and fuels, HNBR for improved heat and ozone resistance, FKM for high temperature and aggressive media, EPDM for water, steam, and brake fluids, silicone (VMQ) for wide temperature and food contact, and FFKM for extreme chemical service; PTFE and PU are used where elastomers fall short. Hardness is typically 70 Shore A, with 90 Shore A used against extrusion at higher pressure, supported by back-up rings. Through Himalay, partner manufacturers can typically supply compound and material certificates to EN 10204 3.1 where specified, dimensional and surface-grade inspection, and RoHS/REACH declarations; FDA, 3-A, or NORSOK/explosive-decompression compound documentation is available for relevant duty, and compound and tolerance class are coordinated as part of the standard order flow.
