About Leaf Springs
Leaf springs are semi-elliptic or parabolic flat-bar springs that carry load while damping road and equipment shock, used widely in commercial-vehicle, trailer, rail and agricultural-machinery suspensions. By spanning the axle and absorbing vertical movement, they combine the roles of spring and locating linkage, which is why they remain common on heavy-duty platforms where simplicity and load capacity matter.
Designs fall into multi-leaf (conventional stacked) and parabolic (tapered, fewer leaves) types, with mono-leaf variants for lighter loads. Spring steels and process control are typically aligned with EN 10089 (hot-rolled spring steels) or comparable grades such as 51CrV4 and 55Cr3; rate, free camber, eye geometry and load rating are defined per the vehicle or equipment specification. Parabolic designs reduce interleaf friction and weight relative to multi-leaf packs.
Materials are usually heat-treated alloy spring steels, quenched and tempered to the required hardness, with surfaces protected by shot-peening, phosphating, and zinc-rich or e-coat paint systems for corrosion resistance. Bushings, eyes and centre bolts are configured to the application. Mono-leaf and tapered designs are typically finished with a wrapper or military eye, and anti-friction liners or interleaf pads may be added to control noise and wear in the pack.
Key controls include hardness, decarburisation limits, residual-stress and shot-peening coverage, load-at-height verification and fatigue performance, normally agreed against the drawing. Himalay coordinates material traceability and EN 10204 3.1 certificates, hardness and load-test reports, plus magnetic-particle or other NDT and salt-spray data where specified, alongside IATF-16949-aligned process documentation and REACH/RoHS declarations, handled as part of the standard order flow.
