Industrial Fuels
Industrial fuels are heavier and utility-grade energy carriers burned for heat, power and process energy in boilers, furnaces, marine engines, kilns and power generation. The category covers fuel oils (heavy fuel oil and marine residual grades), light and heavy furnace oil, kerosene-type heating fuels and bunker fuels. These are bulk-traded commodities specified by viscosity, sulfur and calorific value rather than by brand.
Grades for marine fuels are commonly defined against ISO 8217, which sets distillate (DMA/DMB) and residual (RMG/RMK) categories with limits on viscosity, sulfur, density, pour point, water and sediment; furnace and heating oils follow national or ASTM references. Since the IMO 2020 sulfur cap, very-low-sulfur fuel oil (VLSFO, 0.50% sulfur) and marine gas oil (0.10% in emission-control areas) are key grades alongside high-sulfur fuel oil for scrubber-equipped vessels. Key parameters include kinematic viscosity, sulfur, density, flash point, pour point and calorific value. HS codes are provided on documentation.
Industrial fuels are bulk products moving in vessel parcels, ISO tanks and barges, with drummed lots for smaller furnace-oil users. Many are flammable or combustible dangerous goods shipped under their assigned UN numbers per ADR/IMDG.
Compliance typically includes SDS provision, CLP/GHS labelling, REACH registration or Only Representative routing for EU entry, and SABER/SASO registration for Saudi Arabia, coordinated where required. Sulfur grade is matched to the destination emissions regime.
