About Hydraulic & Pneumatic Seals
Hydraulic and pneumatic seals are dynamic seals that contain pressurised fluid or air at the moving interfaces of cylinders, actuators, and valves. They split broadly into rod seals (sealing the reciprocating piston rod at the gland), piston seals (sealing the piston against the bore), wipers/scrapers (excluding contamination as the rod retracts), guide/wear rings (centring the piston and rod), and static seals such as O-rings and back-up rings. Profiles are extensive: U-cups, lip seals, compact seals, glyd/slipper rings, T-seals, V-packing sets, and buffer seals, each chosen for pressure, speed, and duty. Hydraulic seals typically handle higher pressures (often into the hundreds of bar) with extrusion-resistant designs, while pneumatic seals favour low friction and dry or lightly lubricated running. Dimensions follow cylinder bore and rod standards such as ISO 6020/6022 and ISO 15552, with groove geometry per supplier and ISO conventions. Materials are selected to media and temperature: polyurethane (AU/EU) for abrasion resistance and high pressure, NBR and HNBR for general oil duty, FKM for heat and aggressive fluids, PTFE and filled-PTFE for low friction and chemical resistance on glyd rings, and POM/PA for guide rings. Hardness ranges from softer lip materials to harder anti-extrusion grades.
