About Bonded & Special Rings
Bonded seals, also called bonded washers or Dowty seals, are composite static seals that combine a metal washer with a vulcanised or bonded elastomer sealing element on the inner bore. Fitted under a bolt head or threaded port fitting, the metal ring controls compression and load while the elastomer lip seals against the mating face, giving a reliable, self-centring seal at threaded and flanged connections in hydraulics, fuel systems, and pneumatics. The broader special-rings family also covers custom rubber-to-metal and rubber-to-plastic bonded components: encapsulated rings, spring-energised seals, and application-specific moulded-and-bonded parts where an elastomer is chemically bonded to a rigid substrate. Bonded seals are sized to the thread or bolt (metric or BSP/UNF), with the metal washer typically carbon steel (zinc-plated), stainless steel, or aluminium, and the elastomer commonly NBR for oils and fuels, FKM for high temperature and aggressive media, or EPDM for water and certain chemicals, usually around 70-80 Shore A. Selection considers thread size and form, sealing face, pressure, temperature, and media compatibility, with the metal grade chosen for corrosion and load. Bond integrity (peel and shear strength) is the critical quality attribute for all bonded parts. Through Himalay, partner manufacturers can typically supply metal and elastomer material certificates to EN 10204 3.1 where specified, dimensional and bond-adhesion test data, plating thickness verification, and RoHS/REACH declarations for EU import; the metal grade, plating, elastomer compound, and any test documentation are coordinated as part of the standard order flow.
