About Automotive Engine & Transmission Seals
Automotive engine and transmission seals are dynamic and static sealing elements that retain oil and lubricant and exclude dirt and moisture at rotating shafts and mating joints in engines, gearboxes, axles and transfer cases. They are used wherever a crankshaft, camshaft, input or output shaft passes through a housing, or where covers and cases meet, preventing lubricant loss and contamination over the life of the drivetrain. The dominant type is the rotary shaft (radial lip) seal, with a spring-energised elastomer lip running on a hardened, ground shaft; related items include valve-stem seals, O-rings, cover gaskets and combined cassette seals. Rotary shaft seals commonly follow DIN 3760 and DIN 3761 dimensional and design references, with O-rings to ISO 3601, and selection driven by shaft diameter, housing bore, speed, temperature and the lubricant. Elastomer grades are chosen for the fluid and temperature: NBR for general oil duty, HNBR and FKM (Viton type) for higher temperature and aggressive oils, with PTFE lips for high-speed or dry-start service and silicone or ACM where specified; lip hardness is given in Shore A and the operating temperature range stated. Configuration covers single or double lip, with or without dust lip, metal-cased or rubber-covered OD, and the spring type, all matched to shaft surface finish and run-out. At Himalay, engine and transmission seals are supplied to your drawing, part number or sample with elastomer grade, lip design and dimensions agreed up front; material and dimensional reports plus RoHS or REACH declarations can be provided where specified, and any special compound or coating is coordinated as part of the standard order flow.
