Analytical grade reagents (AR grade, also designated ACS reagent or GR/guaranteed reagent) are high-purity chemicals used in quantitative laboratory analysis, quality control, and method development, sourced by labs, instrument houses, and reagent distributors. The category spans acids, bases, inorganic salts, solvents, and specialty reagents specified to defined purity for analytical work rather than bulk industrial use.
Grades and specifications are the defining feature. AR/analytical grade typically carries an assay around 99% or higher, with tightly controlled limits on specific impurities (heavy metals, chloride, sulphate, iron, residue on ignition). ACS-grade reagents meet or exceed American Chemical Society purity standards, the recognised benchmark for analytical use. Each lot ships with a CoA stating actual assay and impurity results. Buyers should specify the target grade (AR, ACS, or GR) and any critical impurity limits; CAS and HS classification are provided on documentation rather than asserted here.
Packaging is laboratory-scale: amber or clear glass bottles (250 ml, 500 ml, 1 L, 2.5 L), HDPE bottles for alkalis and aqueous reagents, and fibre or plastic drums for larger volumes. Light- and moisture-sensitive reagents are supplied in protective packaging as a specification note.
