    About 4-Way Solenoid Valves

    5/2 and 4/2 solenoid valves for double-acting cylinders and actuators, single and double solenoid, inline, manifold, NAMUR and ISO 5599 mounting.

    A 4-way solenoid valve alternately pressurises one side of a double-acting cylinder or pneumatic actuator while exhausting the other, which is what strokes the piston in both directions. Modern pneumatic practice builds them as 5/2 valves, with one pressure port, two outlets and two exhausts; the 4/2 designation with a single shared exhaust survives mainly in hydraulics and some compact designs, and both do the same job. Single-solenoid valves return by spring to a defined position on power loss, while double-solenoid (bistable) valves hold their last position, a fundamental fail-mode decision. 5/3 variants add a centre position, closed, exhausted or pressurised, for mid-stroke stopping. Indian manufacturers commonly supply aluminium and stainless bodies from 1/8 to 1/2 inch inline, manifold-mounted banks, NAMUR-pattern valves for quarter-turn actuators, and sub-base valves to the ISO 5599 interface, with IP65 coils and Ex d or Ex m hazardous-area options.     What the valve is for

    Double-acting cylinders and pneumatic actuators need air driven into one chamber while the other exhausts, then the reverse. The 4-way directional valve does exactly that swap. In pneumatics it is normally built as a 5/2 valve, one pressure port, two cylinder ports, two exhausts; the 4/2 form with a common exhaust does the same job and persists in hydraulics. If the cylinder must also stop mid-stroke, specify a 5/3 valve and choose the centre condition: closed centre holds the load, exhaust centre floats it, pressure centre pressurises both sides.

    Fail mode decides the solenoid count

    A single-solenoid, spring-return valve always returns to its rest position when power is lost, sending the actuator to a defined home state. A double-solenoid valve is bistable and stays where it was last switched, so the machine freezes rather than moving; that is often safer for clamps and diverters but never an accident, so make it a deliberate choice and state it in the enquiry. Double-solenoid valves accept short pulse signals, which suits PLC outputs.

    Mounting patterns

    Inline threaded bodies, 1/8 to 1/2 inch BSP or NPT, suit scattered single valves. Manifold bases gang valves into stations sharing one supply and common exhausts, cutting tubing and wiring. NAMUR-pattern valves bolt directly onto quarter-turn actuator interfaces, and most convert between 5/2 and 3/2 with a gasket change. Sub-base valves to ISO 5599 sizes 1 to 3 make the valve a brand-interchangeable plug-in, valuable on export machines and multi-vendor plants.

    Flow and speed

    Size on Kv against cylinder bore, stroke and cycle rate, not on port thread. Exhaust capacity sets stroke speed as much as supply does; independent exhaust restrictors on the two exhaust ports of a 5/2 valve are the standard way to set extend and retract speeds separately. Most 5/2 valves are internally pilot-operated spool designs and need a minimum pressure, typically 1.5 to 2 bar, to switch; below that ask for an externally piloted version.

    Construction, electrics and certification

    Aluminium spool valves with elastomer or lapped-metal seals dominate; SS316 versions serve corrosive and offshore sites. Coils are commonly 24 V DC and 110/230 V AC, class F, ED 100%, IP65 with DIN-type connectors; specify NEMA 4X housings for washdown, and Ex d or Ex m coils certified to ATEX/IECEx or IS/IEC 60079 for classified areas.     How 4-Way Solenoid Valves Work

    The spool at the centre

    Nearly every 4-way pneumatic valve is a spool valve: a machined shaft with lands and grooves sliding in a sleeve whose bore is intersected by five port galleries. In one spool position the pressure gallery feeds cylinder port A while cylinder port B is open to its exhaust; shift the spool and the connections mirror, feeding B and exhausting A. Because supply pressure acts on balanced spool areas, the force needed to shift the spool is small and nearly independent of line pressure, which is what lets a compact coil switch a high-flow valve.

    Internal pilots do the pushing

    In most industrial valves the solenoid does not move the spool directly. It is a miniature 3/2 pilot valve that admits line air to a piston on the spool end; the air does the shifting. This multiplies force and keeps coils small and cool, but it means the valve needs a minimum pilot pressure, commonly 1.5 to 2 bar, to switch at all. Externally piloted versions take pilot air from a separate port so the main medium can be at low pressure or vacuum. Direct-acting spool valves exist at small sizes where zero-pressure switching is required.

    Monostable and bistable behaviour

    A single-solenoid valve has a return spring, so it occupies its rest position whenever the coil is dead: energise to work, de-energise to return. A double-solenoid valve replaces the spring with a second pilot; each coil pulse pushes the spool to one end where friction and detent keep it, giving a memory function that survives power loss. If both coils of a bistable valve are energised together the first one to act wins and the valve stays put, a PLC programming trap worth interlocking against.

    5/3 centre positions

    Three-position valves add centring springs and a defined middle state. Closed centre traps air on both cylinder sides, holding the load but making the next start jump; exhaust centre releases both sides so the load can be moved by hand; pressure centre feeds both sides, balancing vertical loads on unequal piston areas. Centre leakage across spool clearances means none of these should be treated as a locking device for suspended loads.

    Failure modes and service detail

    Spools score on dirty air and stick after long idle periods when lubricant dries, so a 5 micron filter and either consistent lubrication or none at all, never intermittent, are the rule. Exhaust silencers clog and slow the machine before anything else visibly fails; they are maintenance parts. Soft-seal spools give bubble-tight shutoff between ports, lapped metal spools leak slightly by design, a distinction that matters when a cylinder must hold position for hours. Coil life follows temperature: continuous duty in a hot enclosure calls for class H insulation or low-power coils. When a machine misbehaves intermittently, measure pilot pressure at the valve during the fault first, because marginal pilot pressure is the commonest cause of a spool that almost, but not quite, shifts.
