- How do I choose the right heavy-duty gearbox for high-shock duty?
- Selection turns on application service factor, not just nominal torque. Identify the duty: steady process drives may be sized around AGMA SF 1.25-1.5, whereas crane, hoist, reversing-mill and similar shock or cyclic loads β classified by FEM/ISO duty class M5-M8 or AGMA load class β typically require SF 2.0-3.0 so the gear set survives peak and starting torque. Then check the thermal rating against ambient temperature and run hours, since a unit can be torque-adequate yet thermally limited in a hot, enclosed plant. Sharing the load spectrum, daily hours, reversals and ambient lets a partner size both the mechanical and thermal capacity correctly rather than under-rating on steady torque alone.
- What is the typical MOQ for heavy-duty gearboxes?
- Because these are larger engineered units, MOQ is low: many crane, mill and extruder drives are quotable as single units or in small batches of 2-5 per configuration. Smaller standard frames in a series may carry a modest MOQ of 5-10. Mixed packages across one project spec are generally accepted.
- Which certifications and reports are available?
- Where specified, partners provide CE under the Machinery Directive, ATEX/IECEx for hazardous-area builds, ISO 9001 quality systems, and gear load, efficiency and (on larger units) no-load run and temperature-rise test reports referencing AGMA 2101/ISO 6336. Material certificates and heat-treatment traceability for the gear train can be arranged.
- What ratios, mounting and service factors can be configured?
- Total ratios run from roughly 3:1 to over 100:1 across single to four stages, in parallel-shaft, right-angle and herringbone layouts, foot or shaft mounted, with solid or hollow output and shrink disc or flange. Service factor is selected to the duty class β higher for crane, hoist and mill shock loads β and lubrication is mineral or synthetic PAO ISO VG 220/320 with cooling specified against ambient temperature and thermal rating.

- Larger engineered gearboxes typically take 10-16 weeks to manufacture and test, depending on casting, gear-cutting and bearing lead times. Full CIF to Rotterdam, Antwerp, Jebel Ali or Dammam is generally 14-20 weeks door-to-door for engineered units, with smaller standard frames closer to 8-12 weeks.
