About Steel Castings
Steel castings are components cast from carbon, low-alloy or stainless steel where higher strength, toughness and weldability are needed than iron can provide. They serve valve and pump bodies, structural and mining parts, railway components and high-temperature or pressure-containing equipment, combining the design freedom of casting with steel's mechanical performance.
Carbon and low-alloy pressure castings are commonly specified to ASTM A216 (grades WCA, WCB, WCC for high-temperature service) and A217 for alloy grades, while austenitic stainless castings follow ASTM A351 (e.g. CF8, CF8M); IS 1030 and EN 10213 cover comparable Indian and European grades. Sand casting is typical for larger parts and investment casting for smaller, near-net components, with key specs covering grade, class, section and tolerance.
Grades are chosen by strength, temperature and corrosion needs, with heat treatment (normalising, quench-and-temper, solution annealing for stainless) and finishes such as paint, galvanising or passivation applied accordingly. Duplex and low-temperature impact-tested grades are available where sour-service or cryogenic toughness is required. Qualified weld-repair procedures, machining allowances and the casting acceptance class are defined on the drawing and inspection plan.
Soundness, mechanical properties and pressure integrity are normally agreed against grade and acceptance class. Himalay coordinates material traceability and EN 10204 3.1/3.2 certificates, chemical, tensile, impact and hardness reports, and NDT β ultrasonic, radiographic, magnetic-particle or dye-penetrant β plus hydrostatic testing, NACE MR0175 and PED-CE or SABER documentation where specified, handled as part of the standard order flow.
