Specialised medical lights cover the active luminaires designed for specific clinical disciplines and tasks that fall outside general surgical, examination and phototherapy categories. The group includes ophthalmic and ENT lights, dental operatory lights, gynaecology and dermatology lamps, headlights, slit and transillumination lights, and similar discipline-specific systems where beam shape, working distance and colour fidelity are tuned to the task.
Formats range from ceiling, wall and mobile mounts to chair-mounted, clamp-on and wearable (headlight) units, predominantly LED. Buyers generally specify against IEC 60601-1 for basic safety, with IEC 60601-2-41 referenced where the device functions as a surgical or diagnostic luminaire. Commercial parameters depend on the discipline but commonly include illuminance in lux at a stated distance, correlated colour temperature within the band referenced by the standard, colour rendering index Ra, spot/field geometry, focusability and — for headlights — weight and battery runtime.
Construction centres on application-specific optics, cleanable housings suited to disinfection, ergonomic positioning hardware and dimming or focus control. EU MDR 2017/745 classification varies by intended use and is determined by the manufacturer, so it should be confirmed per device type.
Configuration options usually include discipline-specific beam profiles, a choice of mounting or wearable formats, mains or rechargeable-battery operation, and selectable colour temperature or focus.
