Spark Plugs
Spark plugs deliver the high-voltage spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture in a petrol engine, firing across a gap between a central and ground electrode driven by the ignition coil. As a high-volume service and OEM part, consistent gap, heat range and thread fitment are the defining quality factors. Spark plugs are generally specified by thread size and reach (e.g. M12/M14 with various reach lengths), seat type (gasket or taper), hex size, heat range and electrode material. Dimensional and performance characteristics commonly reference ISO 28741 for spark plugs and gauges; as engine-management components they sit within UN/ECE R10 (EMC) and IATF 16949 quality expectations. The insulator-nose operating window is typically managed around the well-known 450-850 C range to balance fouling resistance against pre-ignition.
Construction includes an alumina ceramic insulator, copper-cored steel shell, and electrodes in nickel alloy, platinum or iridium for longer service life and finer gaps. Materials and tip design govern durability and ignitability.
Options include single and multi-ground electrodes, projected and recessed tip designs, resistor types for EMC suppression, fine-wire precious-metal tips for extended intervals, and pre-set gaps to a target value.
