Pressure relief valves (PRVs) are self-acting over-pressure protection devices that open automatically when the system pressure reaches a predetermined set pressure, discharge excess fluid to relieve the system, and reclose once pressure falls back below the reseat point. A spring (or, in pilot-operated designs, the process pressure acting through a pilot) holds the disc against the nozzle until the upward force from set pressure overcomes it. They are sized so that the relieving capacity exceeds the worst credible over-pressure scenario, making them the primary mechanical safeguard against vessel and pipe rupture.

The principal design families are conventional spring-loaded, balanced-bellows, and pilot-operated. Flanged steel relief valves follow API 526, which fixes standardised orifice letters D through T (effective areas from about 0.110 inΒ² up to 26 inΒ²) and centre-to-face dimensions; sizing follows API 520 Part I with relief scenarios per API 521; seat tightness is verified to API 527. For code compliance, valves carry the ASME Section VIII Div.1 'UV' stamp in North America, or EN ISO 4126-1 (and -4 for pilot-operated) under PED 2014/68/EU in Europe. Liquid 'thermal' relief, steam safety, and gas/vapour service each use distinct sizing factors.

Materials range from bronze/brass and WCB/A216 carbon to A352 LCC for low temperature, CF8M (SS316) and duplex/super-duplex for corrosive duty, with Inconel or Monel nozzles and trim for sour or aggressive media. Standard geometry is a flanged ANSI B16.5 RF/RTJ inlet with a one- or two-size-larger outlet; smaller valves are threaded NPT/BSP.

As self-actuated devices, the configuration levers are set pressure (typically certified within Β±3%), the API 526 orifice letter chosen from the required area, and the backpressure handling: conventional for low constant backpressure, balanced-bellows where superimposed or built-up backpressure exceeds roughly 10% of set, and pilot-operated for high backpressure with tight shutoff near set.

Himalay's MSME partners manufacture pressure relief valves with testing per API 527 / API 598 / ISO 5208, set-pressure and capacity certification, material traceability, and ASME 'UV', PED-CE (EU), SABER (Saudi Arabia), and NACE MR0175 (sour service) coordinated as part of the standard order flow.
