Phototherapy systems are active medical devices that deliver controlled light — most commonly blue-spectrum light for neonatal jaundice — to treat patients through measured spectral irradiance over a defined treatment area. Formats include overhead LED units, mobile stands, LED phototherapy pads/blankets and combination cradle systems, with LED emitters now standard. Buyers commonly specify infant phototherapy equipment against IEC/EN 60601-2-50 (the particular standard for infant phototherapy) alongside IEC 60601-1 for basic safety. Key commercial parameters are spectral irradiance (often expressed in microwatts per square centimetre per nanometre), the effective treatment-surface dimensions, peak wavelength and spectral band (typically in the blue region for jaundice), irradiance uniformity and treatment-distance settings.
Construction centres on long-life LED arrays with low heat output, cleanable housings suited to neonatal environments, height/angle adjustment and controls for irradiance level and timed therapy. EU MDR 2017/745 classification is determined by the manufacturer according to intended use and patient population, so it should be confirmed per model rather than assumed.
