OTDR Equipment
OTDR (optical time-domain reflectometer) equipment characterises optical fibre links by sending light pulses down the fibre and measuring the backscattered and reflected light over time, producing a trace that locates splices, connectors, bends, breaks and the loss at each event from a single end. Typical buyers include telecom and FTTx contractors, data-centre and enterprise network teams, and fibre-installation and maintenance providers across the EU and GCC. The family covers handheld field OTDRs, FTTx/PON-optimised units, multi-wavelength testers and benchtop instruments, often bundled with optical power meters, light sources and fibre inspection probes. Key parameters generally include the wavelengths supported (for example 1310/1550 nm for single-mode, 850/1300 nm for multimode, and 1625/1650 nm for live PON maintenance), dynamic range in dB (which sets the maximum measurable link loss/length), event and attenuation dead zones, pulse-width range, distance accuracy and sampling resolution. Calibration of single-mode OTDRs is addressed by IEC 61746-1, and instrument safety and EMC design typically reference IEC 61010 and IEC 61326; laser safety classification is also relevant. Construction is usually a rugged sealed handheld with a defined ingress rating, rechargeable battery and interchangeable optical connectors. Configuration options often include extra wavelengths, integrated power meter/VFL, launch fibres and reporting software.
