About Non-Ferrous Castings
Non-ferrous castings are components cast from aluminium, copper-base alloys (bronze and brass), zinc and related metals, chosen for light weight, corrosion resistance, thermal and electrical conductivity, or bearing properties. They appear in pump and valve components, electrical and plumbing fittings, marine hardware, automotive housings and decorative parts, where iron and steel are unsuitable on weight or corrosion grounds.
Aluminium castings are commonly specified to ASTM B26 (sand) and B85 (die) or EN 1706 grades such as A356 and LM-series alloys; copper-base castings follow ASTM B584 (e.g. C83600 leaded red brass, C90300/C95400 bronzes) or EN 1982; zinc die-castings (ZA / Zamak) follow ASTM B86. Processes span sand, gravity die, high-pressure die and investment casting, with key specs covering alloy, temper and tolerance.
Alloys are selected by strength, corrosion, conductivity or bearing duty, with heat treatment (T5/T6 for aluminium) and finishes such as anodising, powder coat, plating or passivation applied as required. Leaded and low-lead copper grades are offered depending on machinability and RoHS or drinking-water requirements. Wall thickness, draft, gating and machining stock are defined on the drawing, and pressure-tight castings can be impregnated to seal microporosity.
Soundness, dimensional accuracy and alloy composition are normally agreed against the drawing and grade. Himalay coordinates material traceability and EN 10204 3.1 certificates, spectro-chemical and mechanical reports, plus NDT such as X-ray or dye-penetrant and pressure/leak testing where specified, alongside RoHS/REACH and, for fluid parts, PED-CE documentation, handled as part of the standard order flow.
