Industrial Globe Valves
Industrial globe valves are linear-motion valves in which a disc moves perpendicular to a horizontal seat, with flow turning through the body in a characteristic S-path. Because the disc approaches the seat gradually and seating force builds smoothly, globe valves both isolate and throttle effectively, and they are the standard choice where flow regulation, frequent operation or tight regulating shut-off is required. The trade-off is a higher pressure drop than a straight-through gate or ball valve.
The family is defined by a small set of standards. Cast steel globe valves to API 623 cover heavy-duty refinery and petrochemical service in sizes 2" and above and pressure classes ASME 150 through 2500, with API 623 imposing thicker walls and full disc guidance compared with the older BS 1873, which covers OS&Y cast and forged carbon and alloy globe and stop-check valves from 1/2" to 16" in Classes 150 to 2500. Compact forged globe valves to API 602 cover small-bore lines, typically NPS 2 and below into NPS 4, in classes to 1500 and 2500. Straight, angle and Y-pattern bodies are available, with stop-check variants for boiler and pump-discharge service. Shell and seat testing follows API 598 or BS EN 12266-1, with the pressure envelope per ASME B16.34.
Materials span A216 WCB carbon, A217 chrome-moly for high temperature, A351 CF8/CF8M stainless, bronze for utility duty, and duplex or nickel alloys for corrosive media; seats use 13Cr or Stellite facing for regulating service. End connections include flanged ANSI B16.5 RF/RTJ, butt-weld, socket-weld and threaded.
Operation is by handwheel, gear, or factory-mounted electric and pneumatic actuators, where specified.
