Glow Plugs
Glow plugs are heating elements threaded into a diesel engine's combustion chamber or pre-chamber to provide the heat needed for cold starting and smooth low-temperature running. Energised by the glow control unit before and often during start-up, the tip heats rapidly to aid ignition of the diesel charge. Glow plugs are generally specified by thread size and reach, voltage (commonly 5 V, 11 V or 12 V system-dependent), heat-up time and tip technology. Modern self-regulating metal and ceramic plugs reach operating temperature in seconds and modulate current to avoid overheating.
Construction includes a metal-sheathed heating coil packed in magnesium-oxide insulation, or a ceramic element for higher temperatures and faster response, sealed into a steel body with a terminal stud or integrated connector. Tip material and regulation govern durability and start performance.
