Frequency Counters
Frequency counters measure the frequency, period, time interval, pulse width, duty cycle and event count of electrical signals with high resolution and accuracy. They are core instruments for RF and communications labs, oscillator and clock characterisation, calibration houses and production test, and are a specialised sourcing item for EU and GCC electronics manufacturers, test laboratories and distributors.
The family includes universal counters that measure frequency, period and time interval, RF/microwave counters with extended frequency range, and timer/counters for event and totalise functions. Key specification parameters include maximum input frequency (from tens of MHz on basic units to several GHz on RF models), resolution in digits per second of gate time, time-base stability (TCXO, OCXO or rubidium reference, with stability often quoted in parts per million or better), input sensitivity and impedance, and trigger options. Safety is governed by IEC 61010-1; EMC under IEC 61326-1.
Construction is typically a benchtop or half-rack instrument with BNC or SMA inputs, selectable input conditioning and a stable internal time base, with provision for an external reference. Options commonly include high-stability oven or atomic references, additional input channels, statistics and histogram analysis, and USB/LAN/GPIB communications.
