Eye & Face Protection
Eye and face protection covers safety spectacles, goggles, face shields and welding protection that guard against mechanical impact, dust, chemical splash, molten metal, optical radiation and arc hazards. It is high-volume PPE across construction, metalworking, laboratories, pharmaceuticals and process plants, and a staple line for EU and GCC safety distributors.
The governing European standard is EN 166, which classifies and marks eyewear by optical class and by impact and hazard performance: impact grades S, F (low energy, 45 m/s), B (medium, 120 m/s) and A (high, 190 m/s), plus field-of-use codes such as 3 (liquids), 4 (large dust), 5 (gas/fine dust), 8 (arc) and 9 (molten metal). Related standards include EN 170 (UV), EN 172 (sunglare), EN 169 (welding filters) and EN 175 (welding face protection). Markings appear on both lens and frame so buyers can verify the protection level. The recognised North American equivalent is ANSI/ISEA Z87.1, which uses its own impact and splash designations.
Construction typically uses polycarbonate lenses for impact resistance, with anti-scratch and anti-fog coatings, UV filtering, and frames in nylon or TPR with adjustable temples. Goggles add indirect or direct venting for splash and dust; face shields offer full-face coverage and are often paired with helmet brackets. Specifiable options include lens tint, coating package, prescription-insert compatibility and brand printing.
