Examination Lights
Examination lights are active medical luminaires that provide focused, colour-accurate illumination for general patient examination, diagnosis and light treatment in clinics, wards, consulting rooms and outpatient departments. They sit below surgical lights in illuminance but are specified on the same principles: clean light quality, controllable beam and reliable electrical safety in continuous clinical service.
Formats include mobile (trolley) units, wall-mounted, ceiling-mounted, rail-mounted and bench/clamp versions, almost universally LED today. Buyers commonly specify against IEC 60601-1 for basic safety and reference IEC 60601-2-41 for diagnostic luminaires. Key commercial parameters are central illuminance quoted in lux at a stated distance (typically 1 m, with higher figures at closer working distances), correlated colour temperature (often in the 3000-6700 K band referenced by the standard), colour rendering index Ra in the 85-100 region, spot diameter, focusability and arm reach/positioning stability.
Construction centres on long-life LED arrays in cleanable housings, flexible or spring-balanced arms for precise positioning, dimming control and low heat at the working surface. Many mobile and wall examination lights fall within the lower active-device classes under EU MDR 2017/745, though classification is always determined by the manufacturer's intended use.
Configuration options usually include floor/wall/ceiling/rail/clamp mounting, mains or rechargeable-battery operation, focusable versus flood beams, dimming and selectable colour temperature.
