Charging Connectors
EV charging connectors are the plugs, inlets and cable assemblies that physically and electrically couple an electric vehicle to its supply equipment, carrying power and control/communication signals during charging. As the repeatedly mated, current-bearing interface, contact integrity, thermal performance and standard conformity define their quality. Connectors are generally specified by standard/type, AC versus DC, current and voltage rating, single- or three-phase, cable cross-section and tethered-cable versus socket configuration. European-market parts predominantly follow IEC 62196 — Type 2 for AC and CCS Combo 2 for DC fast charging — with control-pilot/communication behaviour aligned to IEC 61851 and high-level communication per ISO 15118. Safety, temperature and IP ratings reference the IEC 62196 / IEC 61851 series; CE under the relevant directives is the typical EU route.
Construction includes power and signal contacts (silver- or tin-plated), temperature sensors in higher-power DC connectors, robust insulating housings, strain relief and IP54+ sealing when mated. DC fast-charge connectors may add liquid or convection cooling for high current. Materials and contact plating govern cycle life.
Options include tethered cable assemblies, vehicle inlets, socket outlets, locking actuators and temperature monitoring.
