    Battery management systems (BMS) are the electronic controllers that monitor and protect a lithium-ion battery pack, measuring cell voltages, temperatures and current, balancing cells, estimating state of charge and health, and enforcing safe operating limits. As the safety brain of an EV or storage battery, functional safety, measurement accuracy and protection coverage define their quality.     A BMS is generally specified by cell count/series-parallel topology, system voltage, current rating, communication interface and architecture (centralised or master-slave). It typically references UN/ECE R100 / ISO 6469 electrical-safety expectations, ISO 26262 functional safety for safety-related functions, IEC 62660-style cell context and ISO 16750 environmental loads; pack-level transport must satisfy UN 38.3 for lithium batteries.     Construction includes a main controller and cell-monitoring boards with conformal coating, isolation between HV and LV domains, contactor/precharge control, fuse and current-sense elements, and sealed connectors. Materials and isolation govern safety and reliability.

    Options include configurable protection thresholds, CAN/SMBus communication, passive or active balancing, SoC/SoH estimation algorithms, cell-chemistry adaptation, and program-specific connector and sensing interfaces matched to the pack.
