- How do I choose between a low-backlash planetary, harmonic, and cycloidal precision gearbox?
- As a guide: low-backlash planetary units are a cost-effective all-rounder for servo axes needing 1-5 arcmin and ratios up to around 100:1. Harmonic (strain-wave) drives suit very high single-stage ratios (about 30:1-160:1) with near-zero backlash and compact, lightweight packaging, favoured in robot wrists and aerospace. Cycloidal reducers tend to be chosen where shock tolerance, efficiency and high ratio matter and a small amount of backlash is acceptable. The trade-offs are typically cost, shock/overload tolerance, and how tight the backlash and stiffness must be.
- What is the typical MOQ for precision gearboxes?
- It depends on type and frame size. For larger or specialised precision units, MOQ can start at around 5-10 pieces per size and ratio. For small standard servo-grade frames and catalogue reducers, MOQ is usually higher, often in the 25-100 piece range depending on manufacturer and configuration. Consolidating mixed ratios into one spec package generally allows smaller per-line quantities.
- Which certifications and test reports are available?
- Where specified, partner manufacturers can supply units to ISO 9001 quality systems with accuracy documentation to ISO 1328 (where toothed gears apply), load rating to ISO 6336 or AGMA, and backlash and efficiency test reports with material traceability. CE under the Machinery Directive is available for EU shipments, ATEX/IECEx variants can be arranged where hazardous-area duty applies, and SABER conformity for Saudi Arabia can be coordinated within the order flow.
- How is backlash (arcmin) specified, and what else is configurable?
- Backlash is the defining configuration dimension. Low-backlash planetary grades target roughly 1-5 arcmin, while harmonic drives can reach near-zero (well under 1 arcmin); cycloidal units sit slightly higher but offer strong shock tolerance. Torsional stiffness (Nm/arcmin) is specified alongside backlash for dynamic accuracy. You would also define ratio, input interface (servo flange or free shaft), output type (solid or hollow/through-bore), mounting, and lifetime-filled synthetic lubrication.

Full CIF to Rotterdam, Antwerp, Jebel Ali or Dammam is usually around 8-12 weeks door-to-door for standard product and 14-20 weeks for engineered specials, depending on type, frame size and freight.
