- Which automotive gearbox type fits my vehicle programme?
- It depends on the powertrain. Manual transmissions suit cost-sensitive ICE platforms wanting driver control and high efficiency; differential/final-drive units are needed wherever a live axle splits torque; CVTs suit small-to-mid ICE cars chasing smooth, efficient ratio matching; and single-speed EV reduction drives suit battery-electric platforms. Many programmes combine a transmission with a separate final-drive unit. Share the architecture, torque and target ratios and we can point to the right sub-type and a qualified partner.
- What's a realistic MOQ for automotive gear units or components?
- Automotive volumes are usually higher than industrial. For machined gears, shafts and synchroniser parts, typical MOQ often starts around 250-1,000 pieces per part number depending on size and tooling. Complete assemblies (e.g. EV reduction drives or differential carriers) can start lower, in the tens to low hundreds for validation and pilot batches. Tooling amortisation and annual volume strongly influence per-piece pricing.
- Are automotive quality and compliance documents available?
- Where specified, partner manufacturers operate ISO 9001 and, for series automotive supply, IATF 16949 quality systems, with PPAP, control plans and material traceability. Gear rating follows AGMA/ISO 6336 principles with quality grade to ISO 1328. Where the unit ships as standalone machinery rather than a vehicle component, CE marking to the Machinery Directive can be coordinated. Exact scope should be agreed against the target market at inquiry stage.
- What ratios, interfaces and lubrication can be specified?
- You can typically specify the ratio set (e.g. 5/6-speed steps, final-drive ratio ~3:1 to 5:1, EV reduction ~7:1 to 12:1), shaft and spline interfaces, bell-housing or mounting pattern, bearing arrangement, and gear oil (synthetic, viscosity to the duty). NVH, backlash and case-hardening depth targets can be agreed. Right-angle final drives are usually hypoid or spiral-bevel.
- Can partners build to an OEM drawing or approval?

- What lead times apply for automotive gearbox supply?
- Tooling and first-article validation typically run 8-16 weeks up front; series gear and component batches then run roughly 4-8 weeks. Complete assemblies run longer depending on content. Full CIF to Rotterdam, Antwerp, Jebel Ali or Dammam is typically 8-12 weeks door-to-door for established parts and 14-20 weeks where new tooling or engineered validation is involved.
